Hand Up Program (Comal County Habitat for Humanity)

While working at Comal County Habitat for Humanity, I realized there was a need in our nonprofit community for items that our thrift store accepted daily (beds for displaced families, appliances for people getting back on their feet, building materials for local shelter repairs, etc.).

The Executive Director and I came up with the “Hand Up Program” which allowed for local nonprofits to “apply” on a first-come, first-serve basis to receive gift cards to our thrift store. Nonprofit representatives could use these gift cards to “purchase” items for their organization / client needs, linking nonprofits together for the collaborative good of the community.

Salvation Army Project Proposal

Collaborating with other nonprofit organizations was one of my favorite things about working in the nonprofit industry. One particular project was a months-long chance to pitch a proposal for a detached and mobile addition to the local Salvation Army building. While the project never came to fruition, I enjoyed collaborating with architects and industry experts to find solutions to Salvation Army’s problem at the time. It was a moment where detailed program management collided directly with creativity.

Creating complex presentations that - 1. get the point across, 2. keep the audience engaged, and 3. look good - is one of my favorite things to do. Here are a couple of examples.
